Blockchain for the circular economy: Theorizing blockchain's role in the transition to a circular economy through an empirical investigation

Blockchain is increasingly lauded as an enabler of the transition to a circular economy. While there considerable conceptual research and some empirical studies on this phenomenon, scholars have yet develop theoretical model blockchain's role in transition. Grounded sustainability literature, paper addresses gap through following question: What does blockchain play economy? Following abductive approach, we conducted interviews with ground-level experts implementing innovations for economy across Europe United States. Through thematic analysis, derived relationships among (1) drivers barriers economy, (2) innovation (3) technical challenges blockchain, (4) plays moderating role, interviewees considered it only infrastructural resource rather than panacea.
